- Bowled Move
Ian McBain had always wanted to try lawn bowls when he came across Council’s Move Your Way program. Now, he’s a fully-fledged bowler.
This year’s program runs until 24 March with over a dozen free activities, including kung fu, tai chi, gym, disc golf, pickleball, tennis and basketball.
Ian tried bowls for the first time during last year’s program.
"I wasn’t working and I always wanted to try lawn bowls," he says. "My wife went and did tennis and she went to the gym at Knox Leisureworks. Boronia Bowls Club welcomed us in. The whole club’s been very welcoming.
"The program for lawn bowls went for three weeks. They had a free first year membership so I signed up. Since then, I’ve gotten the uniform, am bowling in their competition teams, purchased my own bowls and if you spoke to my wife she’d probably say I spend all of my life down there.
"It’s given me another opportunity to get out and do things. It’s widened my friendship group."
Ian encourages anyone thinking about trying a new activity to give it a go.
"You might find something like I did with lawn bowls," he says. "It was one of those things at the back of mind that I always wanted to try and it just gelled with me."
Move Your Way runs until 24 March with over 60 free sessions on offer, with activities for all abilities, ages and families across Knox.
