- Have Your Say On Our Draft Plan For Dogs and Cats
We’ve got a plan to make Knox even better for pets and people.
Your feedback helped shape our draft Domestic Animal Management Plan to support responsible dog and cat ownership in Knox for the next four years.
Our draft plan is out for community consultation until 15 October.
We’ve developed ideas to increase desexing rates, address dog waste, review on and off-leash areas and create more enjoyable shared spaces for everyone.
There are about 16,640 registered dogs and 6,482 registered cats in Knox.
In developing our draft plan, we reviewed feedback from more than 380 participants, including dog and cat owners, non-pet owners, park and reserve users and animal businesses.
Our draft plan guides the management of dogs and cats, including:
- promoting responsible pet ownership
- minimising risk of dog attacks
- reducing potential for dogs and cats to create nuisance
- encouraging pet desexing, registration and identification
- addressing overpopulation and euthanasia rates
- effective control of dogs in public
Proposed changes and initiatives include:
- Investigating ways to increase the number of desexed dogs
- Reviewing rules around on and off-leash areas
- Increasing public education about responsible pet ownership to encourage people to pick up after their pets
Some proposed actions in the draft plan require further exploration and community engagement before we make final recommendations. Before we explore these initiatives, we want to understand your level of support for these ideas.
Have we got it right? We want your feedback on the proposed changes and initiatives.
By engaging the community in this process, our goal is to develop a balanced and effective plan that balances the needs and expectations of pet owners and non-pet owners in our community because responsible pet ownership benefits everyone.
