Hear insights from elder advocates

Everyone in the community has a right to feel safe, respected and supported in public spaces and at home. However, some older people are denied these rights, often by the people who are closest to them. Elder abuse is one of the most overlooked and hidden issues in our communities, and like many other forms of family violence, many cases go unreported.

Knox is committed to helping our community to live free from abuse, and this year will acknowledge World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on Tuesday 23rd June with a free event. The day is an opportunity for communities to come together and engage in conversations that not only address elder abuse and ageism, but also preserve the dignity of older people.

In partnership with Each and Eastern Community Legal Centre, this event will raise awareness of elder abuse and gambling harm through storytelling. Elder advocate and local Knox resident, Ray Baird, as well as storytellers from Three Sides of the Coin theatre company, will join us to share their lived experience of elder abuse and gambling harm. Their inspiring stories about resilience, recovery, and the power of community connection will be showcased through short film screenings followed by a Q&A segment.

Following the main event, join us for a free morning tea to connect with one another and spark meaningful conversations.

Over 55’s, their family members and other people who support our community across Knox are encouraged to register for the event via the link below.
