Knox seniors travel the world

From strolling through the streets of Paris to gazing at the beaches of the Greek Islands, local seniors are discovering new ways to explore the world – without packing a suitcase.

Recently, a group of older residents took part in a virtual reality (VR) experience that allowed them to ‘travel’ to iconic tourist destinations using VR headsets. With a simple turn of the head, participants found themselves immersed in famous landmarks, scenic landscapes, and cultural experiences from around the globe.

For many participants, the experience was both exciting and surprisingly emotional. “I never thought I’d get to see places like this again,” shared one attendee. “It felt like I was really there.” Others described the session as calming, inspiring, and a wonderful opportunity to share stories and laughter with friends.

For seniors who may face mobility, health, or travel barriers, virtual travel offers a meaningful way to stay curious, connected, and engaged with the world.

The sessions also provide important social benefits. Participants are encouraged to talk about the destinations they visit, recall past travels, and exchange memories, helping to spark conversation and connection.

Following the positive response, a series of VR pop‑up sessions will be delivered in libraries across the coming months, offering more seniors the chance to take part. Each session will feature a range of destinations and be supported, with hands‑on guidance.
