Learning to live more sustainably from home

Ferntree Gully resident, Jodie, has lived in Knox since 2012 and has long been interested in finding practical ways to live more sustainably. Her interest in reducing waste, saving money and making mindful choices led her to discover the Good for the Hood at Home (Knox@Home) program through the Gardens for Harvest and Biodiversity eNewsletter.

Jodie joined the live webinar Simplify, Reuse & Reset, which focused on creating a calmer, more organised and lower‑waste home. The session shared practical habits such as decluttering, repairing items, reusing household materials and simplifying routines to support wellbeing and reduce stress.

“I liked that it didn’t feel overwhelming,” Jodie said. “It was about making small, realistic changes.”

After watching the webinar, Jodie became more aware of her spending and started taking a thriftier approach. Simple changes, like keeping glass jars and reusing household items, have helped her save money while reducing waste. She appreciated being introduced to helpful websites and resources to continue learning.

With competing priorities and what can feel life never-ending busy schedules, being able to join sessions from home and having the flexibility of on‑demand workshops, allows you to visit the material at a time that suits you.

“You can never learn too much,” Jodie says. “It’s practical, accessible and motivating - you walk away with ideas you can actually use."
