- The Power of Connection Across Generations
As we mark Global Intergenerational Week (April 24–30), it’s the perfect moment to pause and celebrate the power of connection across ages. This international campaign shines a light on the importance of bringing generations together, breaking down stereotypes, nurturing mutual respect, and easing the loneliness too many people experience. When young and old come together, everyone benefits.
In our own community, this truth came to life in a surprising way. What began as an unlikely encounter grew into a meaningful intergenerational bond - one that reminds us just how transformative these connections can be.
Knox locals, Matthew, 16 and Margaret, 80, first met in 2024 whilst participating in an Intergenerational Program at Boronia K-12 College, supported by Council. The focus of the weekly program aimed to bring teenagers and older Knox residents together over cooking, board games, music and craft to foster community connections and challenge ageist stereotypes.
Margaret really enjoyed meeting and working with the students, while being free to wander around the room chatting and learning about why students chose the program and what they thought they would gain from it.
A highlight was meeting Matthew. They became friends over a pizza making activity. This strong friendship has now been going for over 12 months and well beyond the program.
Matthew shares that both Margaret and her husband, Bob are such kind, helpful people.
“I help them sometimes with little jobs around their house and garden - including watering their plants whilst they are away, and they help by teaching me things. Particularly how to cook easy sweets, such as shortbread and scones. I would 100% encourage people to be involved in Intergenerational Programs. They are amazing. Life changing.”
Margaret recently had the opportunity to share her experience with the members of Wantirna South Probus Club on her involvement as a volunteer in the program. From this positive experience, Margaret is now supporting and even facilitating the Intergenerational/Grand parents Playgroup Program at Knox Children and Family Centre in Bayswater.
“I feel invigorated after these sessions, it really makes me feel 20 years younger” she shares.
