Breaking free from online sports betting

Dan, 33, says talking about his online sports betting problem was a relief and helped him start turning things around. He is sharing his story to help others.

As part of the Alliance for Gambling Reform, Council is calling on state and federal governments to introduce reforms to prevent and minimise gambling harm. We know sporting organisations’ reliance on gambling revenue has normalised gambling as part of sport.

“Back when I was gambling, I would not have noticed this at all,” Dan says. “How many people can sit down and watch a game of footy and acknowledge how many gambling ads will be present throughout the whole two or two-and-a-half hours?”

For Dan, who had gambled throughout adulthood, things came to a head around last Christmas.

“My partner found out about the hole that I’d put myself in,” he says.

“I’d gambled on and off for about 15 years. There were times I thought I was gambling more than I should have or could afford but I felt like I was still in control."

“It was only recently things got out of control. I started chasing losses and that’s when things really spiralled. I was using all my wages to gamble with.”

Like many, Dan kept his gambling hidden but he is now encouraging others to seek help.

“Once you start losing money, it becomes a disappointment and embarrassment,” he says. “Then you tell yourself you can win it back but before you know it you’re in such a mess that you can’t contain it yourself."

“When you’re in this predicament, it’s so private that no one knows and you feel like you’re on your own."

“To open up and talk to someone about how it all happened and where it went wrong, it’s a massive weight off your shoulders for sure.”

Council is calling for reforms including a ban on sports betting advertising and targeted online gambling to young people.

We are also seeking a permanent reduction in gambling room operating hours, closing all gambling rooms between midnight and 10am.
