Great Southern Bio Blitz

Calling all nature lovers, help Knox join forces with cities from around the world to capture and upload photographs of local wild plants and animals in the 2026 City Great Southern BioBlitz from Friday 27 – Monday 30 November 2026.

The Great Southern BioBlitz is an international period of intense biological surveying that aims to record all the living species within several designated areas across the Southern Hemisphere in Spring.

The purpose of this event is to highlight both the immense biodiversity spread across the Southern Hemisphere in the flourishing springtime, as well as to engage the public in science and nature learning using the citizen science platform iNaturalist.

This year, Knox is partnering with neighbouring Councils to contribute as the Greater Melbourne Collaboration.

The BioBlitz is a great way to learn about native plants and animals, get involved in local conservation and tap into an online community of biodiversity enthusiasts. All you need to do is head out to your local bushland reserve to discover and take photos of native plants and animals and upload them to the iNaturalist app.

How to participate

  1. Download the free iNaturalist app from Apple store or Google Play or access it using the website
  2. Create a free iNaturalist account
  3. Look out for wild plants and animals to photograph in your local bushland reserves and parks during the observation period
  4. Upload your photographs or sound recordings to the app. You can do this anytime of the year and don’t have to wait for the challenge to commence.
