Navigating dementia

A diagnosis of dementia changes things for the person, their family and friends. But learning what support and advice is available to stay connected, active and engaged in your Knox community can make a huge difference to what that life looks like.

Council has partnered with not-for-profit service provider Care Connect to host the Knox Dementia Connections expo on Wednesday March 25.

The expo is free to attend and is part of a series of initiatives being delivered to the Knox community by the newly formed Knox Dementia Alliance.

Council launched the Alliance last year to promote dementia-friendly initiatives, peer support and social connection opportunities in Knox.

Nearly 2,800 Knox residents live with dementia, with a 148% increase predicted over 35 years.

Care Connect’s Laura Ellett said the expo was a chance to meet others living with dementia and find out about local dementia supports.

“I truly believe everyone has the right to age the way they want to by having the services and supports surrounding them to do that,” she says.

“We know while over 70% of people say they want to stay at home as they age, only 16% of people do. Sometimes the reason for this is as simple as not knowing where to start with aged care, and what supports are available.”
