For many people across Knox, e-scooters are a great way to get around. For riders, it comes down to knowing the laws, riding considerately, and treating your e-scooter like any other vehicle on the road.

In following the rules, it helps ensure you and others in the community are safe.

Some key rules you need to follow when riding an e-scooter

You must be at least 16 years old to ride an e-scooter in Victoria
You must always wear a helmet when riding an e-scooter
The speed limit for an e-scooter is 20 km/h
Your scooter must be compliant (not capable of travelling faster than 25km/h)
You can only ride an e-scooter on bike lanes, shared paths and roads where the speed limit is 60 km/h or less (not on a footpath).
You must obey traffic lights and all other road rules
E-scooters are for one person only
You cannot ride in tandem (side‑by‑side) with another scooter or carry any items that may cause you to lose control of your e-scooter.
If you ride at night or in low light, your scooter must have working front and back lights.
You must not use a mobile phone while riding.
You must not drink alcohol while riding or exceed 0.05 BAC.
You must have zero presence of illicit drugs while riding.

Safety is always a priority and community members who may be concerned about riders or e-scooters that may be in breach of the road rules can make a report to the relevant authority below.

For abandoned e-scooters left across footpaths, dumped in parks or waterways, or scooters that present an accessibility hazard please contact us or if the e-scooter is from a hire company, contact the operator directly for faster removal.
