Taking challenges in their stride

Connecting with other carers was a lifeline for Alex Edwards, especially early in her journey. Now, she leads the monthly Pathways for Carers activity in Knox, where carers of people living with disability or mental illness walk together and learn about news, services and available support.

Alex and husband Russell share two sons with autism.

“The early years were quite challenging at times with our sons being non-verbal but I always found the connection with other fellow carers to be my lifeline,” Alex says.

“When we care for others, we often neglect our own physical and emotional needs. Unfortunately, carer burnout is quite high in our sector; that’s why I recommend connecting with other carers and sharing stories with one another – you’re not alone.

“We share experiences, offer support and build a sense of community with fellow carers who understand the unique challenges and joys of being a carer. It isn't always doom and gloom.

“I feel we gain valuable insights. We learn from other carers' experiences, coping strategies and resources. I think it is so important that we recognise the importance of self care and take a step towards prioritising our own wellbeing.”

Knox has over 17,000 unpaid carers.

Alex volunteers on the Knox Disability Advisory Committee, which guides Council on disability awareness and inclusion.

She is a disability support worker with Interchange Outer East, which received council funding to establish the Knox Inclusive Basketball League in partnership with Knox Basketball.

Her eldest son, Thomas, 23, now works at Interchange Outer East and volunteers and plays in the league. The whole family is actively involved with the Melbourne All-Abilities Lions Club, where Thomas has been elected membership chairperson.

“It’s a great community service organisation where everyone builds their skills in a fun, casual environment,” he says. “As the membership chair, I make sure to induct and provide potential members with information.”

Pathway for Carers is on the fourth Monday of each month (except public holidays), meeting at 10.00am at Coonara Community House, 22 Willow Road, Upper Ferntree Gully, and walking along Ferny Creek Trail. Walkers are joined by guests from local organisations and can share coffee and a chat afterwards.
