- Swap The Office For The Outdoors
With the annual Knox Business National Tree Day just around the corner, local business professionals are preparing to swap their keyboards for planting trowels. This event has grown into one of Knox’s biggest networking and team building days, drawing over 150 professionals from companies of all sizes.
To understand why this event is such a staple on the local business calendar, we caught up with Cummins, a leading local manufacturer and employer whose Scoresby team has made the day a cornerstone of their annual community outreach.
For the past three years, around 50 employees from Cummins’ Scoresby office have headed out into the field for Knox Business National Tree Day, making it one of the largest community involvement activities on their calendar.
The initiative aligns seamlessly with Cummins’ global corporate responsibility program, Every Employee, Every Community, which grants staff volunteer hours to give back locally.
"Sustainability is deeply embedded in Cummins’ core business strategy," says Cummins. "Our employees actively seek opportunities to volunteer in programs that promote environmental awareness. This event is a practical way for our people to contribute locally, support the communities we’re part of, and take action as a team."
While the immediate goal is to improve the local ecosystem and boost biodiversity, the benefits to participating businesses stretch far beyond the tree canopy. Spending a day in the field offers a unique, low-pressure environment for employee engagement, professional networking with other local businesses, and strengthening ties with local government.
According to the Cummins team, the benefits of stepping away from the desk are immediate. Working side by side to plant saplings fosters boosted teamwork and builds strong camaraderie outside the typical office hierarchy.
Additionally, the event opens doors for valuable business-to-business connections by bringing together a diverse mix of sectors, from global giants to local innovators, and allowing participants to easily chat with peers from other organisations.
With major local players like Cummins, Nintendo, Thermo Fisher, and Hyatt Place already locked in, this year's event promises to be the biggest yet.
"We would highly recommend it to any organisation seeking to meaningfully engage employees in community focused activities. It offers a rewarding experience that employees will genuinely benefit from and enjoy. “says Azita Sadeghi, Legal Executive Assistant at Cummins.
