Celebrating Lunar New Year

Knox residents, including Christine Pow, from Mahjong Connection will be celebrating the first day of the Lunar New Year on Tuesday 17 February.

For Christine, growing up in Malaysia she called it Chinese New Year “It is a very important celebration for us Chinese, centred around family gatherings and reunion feasts. It is also a time when elders give red packets to the younger generation, symbolising blessings for good health, prosperity and abundance in the year ahead”.

Christine helped to set up Mahjong Connections in Knox which involves Mahjong being played at different venues across Knox including Knox Library, Millers Homestead, Rowville Library, Westfield Knox Shopping Centre, and U3A.

Mahjong is a very traditional Chinese tile game that requires four players. Like any board game, it involves strategy, skill and scoring through points or faans. It is a game that engages the eyes, hands and mind, and often requires teamwork. Traditionally enjoyed by elders, Mahjong has become increasingly popular in recent years and is now played by both young and old, across different nationalities.

“Mahjong has created great excitement and a real buzz within Knox, with many people talking about this new game being offered to the community as a free learning activity for all ages and nationalities,” shared Christine.

To learn more about how to play Mahjong and celebrate Lunar New Year, come along to the Knox Library’s Mahjong Night on Thursday 26 February at 6pm.
