Neigh horsing around, pony on school run

A pony literally stopped traffic when he was helped across the road by one of Council’s school crossing supervisors outside The Basin Primary School.

Children and passers-by were delighted to see Taffy the pony, proudly ridden by Thomas from grade 2, clip-clopping across Mountain Highway on their way home.

Thomas’s dad Rob says Taffy has been in the family for five years and was more than happy to play chauffeur.

“I just thought, why not? Let’s pick him up on a pony,” Rob says.

“People can’t help but smile when they see us. We get waves, thumbs up, and everyone wants to know his name. Taffy’s an absolute sweetheart — so gentle.

“One gentleman walking by who must have been in his 90s said, ‘I haven’t been picked up from school on a pony since I was a boy’.”

Council has about 125 school crossing supervisors at 92 locations in Knox, working hard to keep children safe on their school journeys.

Drivers are reminded to slow down in school zones, stop at the white crossing line and don’t inch forward. Stay put until the crossing supervisor has left the road completely.

Children (and parents) shouldn’t step over the yellow stop line on the footpath until the supervisor has blown their whistle twice and called them to cross.

Then it’s all hooves — oops, feet — go.
