A safer Knox

Council and police are working closely together to prevent and respond to community safety issues under the new Knox Local Safety Committee.

This collaboration will include quarterly meetings with local organisations to come up with joint responses to emerging issues.

Senior Sergeant Ryan Melville says some local crime trends police are focusing on include public disorder, robberies, burglary and aggravated burglary (ie when someone is at home), vehicle crime, theft and road safety offences.

“That includes addressing the carrying of weapons in a public place, shop theft and antisocial behaviour,” he says.

Ryan explains that many crimes are opportunistic and there are things people can do to help prevent offences such as car theft, theft from cars and burglaries.

“There are some emerging technological advancements that thieves have adopted to assist them in stealing some motor vehicles,” he says. “They can utilise technology to mimic and reprogram keys for certain makes and models. One of the best ways to combat this is by using steering wheel locks and OBD2 port covers.

“I implore the Knox community to take ownership of the security of their homes and vehicles by establishing an evening routine where you check all your doors and windows are locked, vehicles are locked and garage remotes aren’t left in the vehicle. Remove valuables from your vehicles or at least hide them from sight.

“Wherever practicable, install sensor lighting and CCTV around your properties. People can a register their CCTV with Victoria Police, which helps us know where there are cameras and what they are likely to capture.  This makes it a lot faster for us to gather information and evidence to try to solve crimes.

“Through collaborative effort can we create and maintain safer communities.”

Police urge Knox residents to report any incidents to your local police station, Triple Zero (000) or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
