Knox seniors are holding their breath for a new synchronised swimming program.

Eastern Sirens, a volunteer-run organisation, has received a Community Development Fund (CDF) grant from Council to introduce seniors artistic swimming classes for Knox residents.

Not-for-profit community groups in Knox can apply for $3000 to $15,000 in funding under the CDF grant program.

Eastern Sirens co-founder Prateeti Sabhlok says the new program will have mental and physical benefits, and improve social connections and water safety skills for older residents.

“Synchronised swimming is a very low impact sport and a lot of fun,” she says. “It’s like water aerobics because it’s moving to music in water but it’s more skill-based. These classes will be a bit more accessible because they’ll be in shallow water and a bit less intense.”

Prateeti says learning choreography and new skills at any age have been shown to improve cognitive function and memories, which is especially important as we age.

“There has been research and there are studies published that show participating in synchronised swimming as an older person can improve your cognitive abilities, your memory, as well as, of course, the physical benefits.

“If you’re someone who enjoys the water and music, and likes a bit of presentation and being artistic, this is a sport where you can get all those cognitive benefits like improved memory as well as flexibility and strength.”

The program is free and participants will perform a showcase for the local community at the end.

Need funding for your community group?
Applications are now open for the Community Development Fund and the Community Partnership Fund and will close on the 22 June 2026. The funds offer grants for programs, activities and projects that benefit the Knox community.

Community Development Fund: eligible not-for-profit community groups in Knox can apply for up to $15,000 in funding for initiatives that strengthen community connection, inclusion, and wellbeing.

Community Partnership Fund: Council’s largest funding program, provides multi year funding for eligible operational costs to not for profit organisations that deliver ongoing services benefiting Knox residents. It supports organisations to:
•    deliver essential or specialist community services
•    address Council identified priorities and service gaps
•    provide measurable outcomes aligned with the Council and Health & Wellbeing Plan 2025–2029
