Stronger together

Local business success is built collectively, not in isolation. When independent business owners step out from behind their counters to collaborate, the impact ripples far beyond their own front doors, it transforms entire retail precincts into vibrant, connected hubs for residents and visitors alike.

Through initiatives like the Experience Knox Working Group and localised networking events, Council is helping traders connect, share resources, and cross promote.

Experience Knox is a dedicated platform created in collaboration between Knox City Council and local retailers to promote and celebrate our diverse business community. Through its website and social media channels, Experience Knox showcases the unique shops, cafes, and services that make our region thrive, encouraging residents and visitors to shop local, follow along, and support neighbourhood traders.

Council also partners with local business operators through monthly networking sessions. Hosted and facilitated by a different local business each month, these events provide a relaxed space for business owners to connect, share insights, and learn from one another.

For Maddie, the owner of Providence Foods, a retail store at Mountain Gate Ferntree Gully and Chair of the Experience Knox Working Group, joining forces with Council and fellow traders was a clear path to driving meaningful, long term economic growth.

"Business can be very isolating at times, and it is helpful to be a part of a community with a shared purpose," Maddie says. "Meeting together with a common goal allows individual businesses to share resources, communicate struggles, share highlights, and celebrate wins together. A collective group can better advocate for their needs, creating a stronger voice and visibility."

This connected network doesn't just benefit the business owners; it directly enhances the local neighbourhood. When traders build strong relationships, it creates an inviting atmosphere that encourages customers to explore further.

This was on full display at a recent networking event hosted by Paula and Adele, owners of Finders Keepers Emporium. For them, opening their doors after hours was the perfect way to break the ice with neighbouring traders and introduce their business to a wider audience, including local creators looking for a supportive environment to display their work.

"We hope that fellow retailers see how relaxed it is to impart information to each other," Paula and Adele share. "We are all a bit nervous meeting new people, especially our peers, but after a few minutes, a relaxed atmosphere is formed. It is a great way to talk about common goals, current issues relating to a whole group of businesses, and find a support group you didn't know you needed."

At Finders Keepers Emporium, daily interactions show that customers love to stick to local routines, grabbing a bite to eat or completing daily tasks before exploring neighbouring stores. "The collective approach has taught me that there is actually no need for competition," reflect Paula and Adele. "We all want each other to do well. Praise and positivity shine, and I find my customers are always grateful when I recommend another local business. It makes me feel like an active part of our community."
