Thank you - Knox volunteers

Volunteers make a significant different to the Knox community every day.

Knox has a proud volunteering record. The 2021 Census showed there were 17,300 people in Knox aged 15-plus who had volunteered with an organisation or group in the previous 12 months.

In celebrating National Volunteers Week, Council thanks the 350+ volunteers that work with Council staff to deliver many services including meals on wheels, gardening and planting in local parks and reserves, sit on advisory committees and work at key events including Carols by Candlelight and Knox Festival.

We would also like to acknowledge and thank the volunteers who work with other organisations in the community.

One network of volunteers includes the environmental volunteering community. These groups are dedicated to preserving our beautiful natural environment and deliver projects in the form of on-ground conservation projects (such as targeted weed control, revegetation, and habitat restoration), advocacy for better biodiversity outcomes, education, and research.

In 2024, the Knox environmental volunteering network recorded 19,270 hours of work and leveraged over $232,000 for biodiversity projects through successful grants, fundraising, and personal contributions. Their total economic contribution was valued at 1.08 million.

Jenny Rowe, who has been volunteering with the Friends of Blind Creek Billabong for nearly 20 years, says “Blind Creek was littered with trolleys, tyres and other rubbish before the group started in 2001. The special interest group within Knox Environment Society regularly cleans up litter, removes weeds and plants local indigenous flora”.

“The whole idea is to take cuttings of the indigenous plants in the area, and seeds, and propagate them so we can put them back into the area,” Jenny says.

“Our aim is to keep our vegetation for future generations to enjoy because we’re losing so much of it”.

Watch the video below to see firsthand the positive impact Knox’s environmental volunteers are having on our local wildlife, flora and ecosystems.

There are huge benefits in volunteering, and these can include giving back to the community, building confidence, gaining work experience, being active, having social interaction, helping others and learning new skills.
