- What You Need To Know About Bird Flu
H5N1 avian flu (bird flu) was confirmed in Victoria on 30 July 2026. Since then, there have been a number of reported detections in wildlife. To view wildlife cases reported in Victoria and locations where bird flu has been detected, see Agriculture Victoria’s interactive map.
The current risk of bird flu to people in Australia is low and there is currently no indication that people need to change their day-to-day activities. However, it is important to avoid close contact with sick or infected birds, animals or contaminated environments. Further information can be found at Bird flu (avian influenza) - Better Health Channel.
We understand this may be concerning for some residents and thank our community for helping to protect Victoria’s wildlife. We encourage residents to stay informed and follow the latest advice. For the latest updates and information, visit agriculture.vic.gov.au/birdflu or birdflu.gov.au.
Reporting sick or injured wildlife
Community reports play an important role in early detection.
If you see sick or dead birds or other wildlife:
- AVOID contact with sick or dead birds, wildlife or their environment
- RECORD what you see and where you saw it
- REPORT it to DEECA using the online form or call the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888
Reports should only be made for:
- Clusters of five or more sick or dead wild birds of any species anywhere in Victoria.
- A single sick or dead:
- wild seabird, waterbird, shorebird or bird of prey
- marine mammal such as a seal, sea lion or dolphin
Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) will assess each report and determine whether testing is required.
Protecting your birds from bird flu
If you have pet birds or backyard chickens, visit the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) website for simple steps to help protect them.
