Make your relocatable pool safe

Relocatable pools are a fun and affordable way to enjoy a splash at home with the kids. If you are setting one up, you need to comply with the Victorian safety requirements.

In 2019, to save lives from accidental drownings, the Victorian Government introduced safety standards for pools and spas, and this includes relocatable pools.

If your relocatable pool has a water depth greater than 30cm of water, and is set up for 3 or more days, you are required to install permanent safety barriers around the relocatable pool. On the fourth day you must register your relocatable pool with Knox City Council.

Relocatable pools are temporary movable structures that can be set up and taken down easily. They range from small inflatable pools, plastic splash pools and flexible canvas attached to a frame.

It is important that you do not treat them as a toy because they pose a real risk to children. It takes only 5cm of water for a young child to drown. From 2002 to 2021, it was reported that 21 children aged 0-4 years drowned in portable pools in Australia.

Installation of a permanent safety barrier around your relocatable pool requires a building permit before construction commences. You can apply for a building permit through Council, further information is available on our Building permits webpage.

Steps to register your relocatable pool with Council:

  1. Arrange an inspection with a Registered Building Inspector or Building Surveyor to certify that the barrier is compliant. If your barrier meets the safety standards, you will be issued with a Certificate of Pool and Spa Barrier Compliance.
  2. Lodge your Certificate of Pool and Spa Barrier Compliance with Council, within 30 days of the Certificate’s date of issue.

When your relocatable pool is not in use, it is good practice to empty out the water. Be mindful of other items that can gather water in the backyard, e.g. buckets, empty pots, wheelbarrows. It is recommended that you store these away to prevent rain collection.

Always ensure adult supervision of children when they are playing in or around water so that everyone has fun while staying safe.
