Swimming pools and spas register

Register your pool or spa with us and stay compliant. Learn about safety barriers, inspections, fines, and ongoing certification requirements.

Registering your pool or spa

If you own a property in Knox with a pool or spa deeper than 30 cm, you must register it with us.

Steps to register

  1. Complete an online registration form.

    Register your pool or spa

  2. Pay a lodgement fee.
  3. Receive confirmation, including your required safety barrier standard.

If you do not register your pool or spa, you may receive a fine of up to $395.

If your property has already registered, you do not need to register again. If you have received a reminder to lodge a Certificate, refer to the Lodge Certificate of Pool and Spa Barrier Compliance below

Ongoing compliance and inspections

To ensure continued safety, your pool or spa safety barrier must be inspected and certified every four years. A registered building inspector or surveyor must complete this inspection.

If your safety barrier meets standards

Requesting an extension of compliance

If you need more time to submit a compliance certificate, you can apply for an extension. Valid reasons include:

  • Waiting for an inspection appointment.
  • Making repairs to fix non-compliant issues.

If your safety barrier does not meet standards

  • Certificates of non-compliance can only be lodged by a qualified pool inspector (Form 24)
  • Minor issues must be fixed before a follow-up inspection.
  • Major issues will result in a Certificate of Pool and Spa Barrier Non-Compliance.
  • If a non-compliance certificate is issued, Council must be notified immediately, and a fee applies.
    Lodge the Certificate of Non-Compliance

What happens if I don’t comply?

Failure to meet registration and compliance requirements may result in fines. The maximum penalty for unregistered pools or spas is $1,976.

If you remove your pool or spa, notify Council to update your records.

Damaged or fallen pool fences

You can report a damaged or fallen pool fence that presents an imminent danger. We aim to inspect swimming pool barriers within 1 business day of being reported.

Removing a pool or spa

You must tell us if your pool or spa was removed or is not used anymore.
