Knox Youth Advisory Committee (YAC)

The Knox Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) is one of Council’s formal advisory committees.

YAC meetings bring together young people aged 12-25, community representatives and Councillors to have a say about local issues in the Knox area, and to ensure that a youth perspective is considered on issues that affect the lives and wellbeing of local young people.

Meetings are held monthly in a wheelchair-accessible venue.

The purpose of the YAC is to:

  • Provide the opportunity for young people to give their ideas and opinions relating to Council’s plans and policies;
  • Engage in discussion regarding issues that affect young people;
  • Participate in the consideration of strategic Council documents, plans and activities;
  • Provide input into Council’s processes relating to young people; and
  • Provide opportunities to develop young people’s leadership skills and experience.

What is the commitment?

  • Membership is for a 12 month period
  • Members are expected to attend 50% of monthly meetings

What are the benefits?

As a member of the YAC, you will:

  • Meet other young people from the local community
  • Learn about Council and issues facing the local community
  • Have your say in a meaningful way
  • Gain confidence in participating in civic/community engagement processes
  • Have a volunteer role that you can put on your CV
  • Get an awesome dinner each month

Our commitment to diversity

We think that it’s important to hear the voices of diverse young people in Knox. We encourage culturally and linguistically diverse young people, LGBTIQ+ young people, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and young people with disabilities to apply. We would love to speak with you about how we can ensure that the YAC is a supportive and inclusive experience for you.
