Climate Response Plan

The Climate Response Plan 2021 to 2031 aims to protect our community from the effects of climate change and reduce both Council and Community greenhouse emissions.

About the plan

On 27 September 2021, Council adopted the Climate Response Plan 2021 to 2031 to:

  • take action to reduce our impact on the environment
  • prepare for the effects of a changing climate.

The plan provides a roadmap for:

  • Council to reach net zero emissions by 2030
  • the Knox community to reach net zero emissions by 2040.

Climate Response Plan – Year 2 progress

We have made steady progress to reduce our carbon emissions.

Compared to last financial year 2021 to 2022, we have reduced our emissions by 2.7% (225 tonnes of CO2 equivalent) to 8,367 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.

This is equivalent to removing more than 100 passenger cars off the road for one year.

In the past 12 months we have:

  • upgraded 500 streetlights to energy efficient LEDs on Boronia major roads

  • installed 7 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations - 3 for public use and 4 for council fleet cars

  • planted 39,611 plants - 38,000 indigenous plants and 1,611 trees

  • installed 100kW of rooftop solar and 76kWh of batteries across 5 Council sites

  • invited businesses to join a renewable buying group, with 1 business signing the agreement.
