Our vision

Our vision is for Knox City Council to be a fair, equitable and respectful organisation, consciously leading by example on gender equality in our community.

Strategies and actions

We have committed to the following strategies and actions between 2021 and 2025.

Strategy 1: Prevalence and understanding

Strategic goal Key actions

We will identify and contribute to eliminating gender inequality by:

  • understanding its prevalence and nature
  • understanding its drivers and impacts (including bullying, discrimination, harassment, and victimisation).

We will achieve this by:

  • developing and implementing a sexual harassment prevention plan
  • implementing improved data collection and reporting
  • acknowledging the prevalence of sexual harassment and gender inequality
  • reviewing the findings of the 2020-21 LGBTIQ+ Needs Analysis
  • investigating the application of gender-responsive budgeting
  • undertaking a follow-up workplace gender audit by June 2023.

Strategy 2: Prevention and leadership

Strategic goal Key actions

We will champion gender equality leadership and accountability to prevent inequality and harassment before it happens by:

  • visibly setting the right standard
  • prioritising safety, respect, inclusion and equality for all.

We will achieve this by:

  • cultivating an inclusive environment that supports open dialogue
  • updating Knox’s CEO Statement of Commitment and take the Panel Pledge
  • encouraging other leaders to take-up the Panel Pledge
  • building an inclusive leadership capability and implementing bystander training
  • implementing a refreshed flexibility model to support work-life integration while adopting hybrid (remote-friendly) working
  • improving gender composition with directorates and/or functions experiencing significant gender imbalance
  • ensuring resources are allocated to developing and implementing the Gender Equality Action Plan.

Strategy 3: Response and effectiveness

Strategic goal Key actions

We will enable safe reporting, act against the conditions that enable inequity and support respectful transparency to enhance our learning and demonstrate our accountability to others.

We will achieve this by:

  • supporting individuals to speak up in safe and respectful ways
  • conducting additional remuneration analysis to better understand where the pay gap is, and rectify it
  • undertaking a schedule of Gender Impact Assessments
  • exploring the feasibility of introducing a wider range of flexible and supportive leave options that recognise individual needs
  • creating accountability mechanisms
  • prepare and report progress to the Commission for Gender Equality in the Public Sector by 31 October 2023.
