Register my pet or renew registration

All pet owners must microchip and register their cat or dog with their local council.

You can also renew, update or cancel your pet's registration.

Renew a registration

You should receive your renewal notice at the end of February each year. Your animal reference number is at the top right of the notice.

Renew by 10 April each year.

If you miss the deadline, you may receive a fine.

Register a new pet

You must register any cat or dog over 3 months old. Registration must be renewed by 10 April each year.

Fees apply, but some residents may be eligible for a discount.

We aim to process registrations within 10 business days.

Owners of assistance dogs may be eligible for free registration.

Eligibility

To qualify, you must show that:

you have a disability under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992

your dog is trained to perform tasks that help manage that disability (as defined in the Equal Opportunity Act 2010).

The dog must also:

  • be desexed and microchipped
  • be at least 12 months old
  • have completed obedience training with a professional trainer
  • not be a dangerous, menacing, or restricted breed.

Update your pet’s details

You must keep your pet’s details up to date so Council can contact you if your pet is lost.

You can update:

  • your contact details
  • if your pet has died
  • if your pet no longer lives in Knox.

Provide your pet’s tag number or reference number (on your latest notice). Updates are processed within 10 business days.

Always make sure your pet details are correct and current with Council. Up-to-date information is vital in helping us reunite lost pets with their owners.

Update your microchip

Council does not hold your pet’s microchip data. To update these details, contact your pet’s microchip registry. If you don’t know which registry, visit Pet Address.

Cancel a registration

If you are no longer the owner of a pet, you must tell us. This may be because your pet has died or moved to a new owner.

If the pet still lives in Knox, the new owner must complete a new registration form.

Unregistered animals

We conduct random door-knock checks. Owners of unregistered cats or dogs may receive a fine.

Keeping more than two pets

You need to apply for a permit to keep more than two cats or dogs in Knox.

Pet identification tags

Council provides lifetime tags for registered pets. Your pet must wear the tag at all times. Fines apply if your pet is found without it.

  • Lost or damaged tags can be replaced.
