Street parking sensors

On-street parking sensors help manage parking in high-demand areas and encourage efficient turnover of spaces.

About on-street parking sensors

On-street parking sensors are being installed in Knox from August 2023 across exiting restricted parking areas. There will be no changes to existing parking time limits, the infringement process, or fine amounts.  However, customers should be aware the time a vehicle enters a car space is the time the sensor will begin tracking the use of the parking bay.

FAQs

Why did Council install parking sensors?

Parking sensors are efficient, accurate and cost effective. They help us to ensure to manage supply of parking in high-demand areas in in a fair and equitable way. The technology supports steady turnover of parking spaces, helping to make parking more available for everyone. The data collected will help us assess parking use and identify where future improvements can be made for the benefit of our community.

Where are the sensors installed?

Are the sensors reliable?

Sensors are extremely accurate and reliable.  Regular testing is also conducted to ensure they are working correctly.  Many other councils across Victoria have installed them due to their proven technology.

How do the sensors work?

Sensors are small electronic devices that are installed in the ground underneath parking bays to detect and record when a vehicle enters or departs the bay. When a vehicle moves in to a space, the sensor is activated and records the arrival time. If a vehicle overstays the maximum time permitted, officers are notified and can investigate if an offence has occurred.

How will the data collected be used?

The data collected by the sensors will not be tracked.  It will be used to assess parking use and identify where future improvements can be made for the benefit of our community.

Will enforcement rules change?

There will be no changes to existing parking times or how parking fines are issued.  Whilst the sensors will allow the parking officers to be more efficient, the same grace periods will apply.

I need to do work in the road and there is a parking sensor. What should I do?

Please contact Knox City Council via knoxcc@knox.vic.gov.au or call 9298 8000 prior to the start of any works.

Will the sensors impact the conditions of Disability Parking permits (as part of Accessible Parking Permit Scheme)?

No, there will be no changes to the Accessible Parking Permit Scheme or the obligations and rights of drivers with mobility permits.
