Pay your rates

You can pay your rates in full or in instalments, set up payment and notification options, request a rates refund and find out about payment assistance.

 

Ways to pay

Pay in flexible instalments with Payble

You can set up secure one-off payments or a weekly, fortnightly or monthly payment schedule through Payble. After you set up your payment schedule, you will receive SMS and/or email reminders for upcoming and overdue payments. 

You can also change your payment schedules at any time without contacting Council. To set up and manage your account, visit the Knox Payble website

Direct debit

Credit card online

You can pay online using Visa or MasterCard. You will need your 7-digit rates assessment number shown at the top of your rates notice.

BPAY

To pay your rates by BPAY, contact your bank or financial institution to find out how to make a payment. 

You can pay from your cheque or savings account, or use your credit card. 

Enter the biller code and rates assessment number shown on the front of your rates notice next to the BPAY symbol.

Telephone

You can pay your rates over the phone using the Knox City Council payment line. Call 1300 668 153 and pay by Visa or MasterCard. 

The service is automated, so have your rates assessment number and credit card details ready before you call. 

You can make payments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Post

You can pay by cheque posted to Council.

  • Make your cheque payable to Knox City Council and cross it 'not negotiable'.
  • Post your cheque to Knox City Council, 511 Burwood Highway, Wantirna South Vic 3152.
  • Receipts are not issued for payments by post.
  • Please do not pin or staple your cheque to the notice when returning the payment.

In person

Civic Centre

You can pay your rates in person at Knox City Council. Go to the Civic Centre at 511 Burwood Highway, Wantirna South. Bring your rates notice and pay by cash or EFTPOS.

The Customer Service Desk is open Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 5 pm, and is closed on public holidays.

At the post office

You can also pay in person at any Australia Post office. Bring your account notice when you make your payment.

 

Pay in full or by instalments

You can pay your rates in one simple payment on or before 15 February 2027.

To pay by instalments, you need to have paid your first instalment before 30 September 2026.

Pay in 4 instalments

You can split your rates across 4 payments.

The due dates are:

  • Instalment 1 – 30 September 2026
  • Instalment 2 – 30 November 2026
  • Instalment 3 – 28 February 2027
  • Instalment 4 – 31 May 2027.

You must pay your first instalment, including any arrears, before 30 September 2026.

You can:

  • pay in smaller amounts whenever you like, as long as the full instalment is paid by the due date
  • set up BPAY or pay at a post office
  • spread your payments weekly or fortnightly, as long as each instalment is fully paid on time
  • make sure your total rates are paid in full by the end of the financial year.

Example

If your instalment is $800 and the due date is in 8 weeks, you could pay $100 each week or $200 each fortnight. As long as the full $800 is paid by the due date, your instalment will be on time.

If you miss paying the full first instalment amount by 30 September 2026, you will have to pay the rates in full by 15 February 2027.

Pay in 9 instalments

You can split your rates across 9 payments. 

You must follow the payment schedule below and complete all payments by 31 May 2027.

The due dates are:

  • Instalment 1 – 30 September 2026
  • Instalment 2 – 31 October 2026
  • Instalment 3 – 30 November 2026
  • Instalment 4 – 31 December 2026
  • Instalment 5 – 31 January 2027
  • Instalment 6 – 28 February 2027
  • Instalment 7 – 31 March 2027
  • Instalment 8 – 30 April 2027
  • Instalment 9 – 31 May 2027

 

Credit card payment surcharges

When you pay Council using a Mastercard or Visa, a surcharge fee will apply. The following surcharge fees apply until 30 September 2026.

Surcharges

Australia Post payments

Australia Post payments will incur a 0.44% fee calculated on the transaction value.

Online payments 

Online payments will incur a 0.4% fee calculated on the transaction value.

Phone payments 

Phone payments via 1300 668 153 will incur a 0.4% fee calculated on the transaction value.

In-person payments

In-person payments at the Civic Centre will incur a 0.4% fee calculated on the transaction value.

Direct debit (Payble) payments

Direct debit (Payble) payments will incur a 0.4% fee calculated on the transaction value.

BPAY payments

There is no surcharge fee applied to a BPAY payment.

Overdue rates payments

If you have any late rates payments or owe money from a previous year’s rates notice, you are in arrears. You must pay arrears immediately. Council may take legal action if arrears are not paid.

Interest is charged on arrears and late payments from the due date. This continues until you pay all rates in full.

The penalty interest rate is set under the Local Government Act 1989 and is set by the Minister for Local Government.

Request a rates refund

You can request a rates refund by:

We aim to process rates refund requests within 15 business days. If a refund needs to be issued by cheque or EFT and we do not have your bank details, processing may take up to 30 business days.

Your refund request must include:

  • your rates assessment number and property address
  • date of payment
  • a copy of the proof of payment showing the amount that you paid (unless the credit is a direct result of a pensioner concession being applied).

If you originally paid by:

  • BPAY – we will refund the money back to the same account you used to make the payment
  • credit card – we will refund the money back to the same credit card you used to pay.

We will pay other rate refunds by cheque or EFT. If you request a refund by EFT, you must also provide a copy of a recent bank statement. The statement must clearly show the BSB, account number and the name of the account holder or holders.

Rebates and payment assistance

If you are a pensioner, you may be able to claim a pensioner concession rebate.

Council offers payment assistance to people who have suffered loss of income or are in financial difficulty.
