Who can get a residential parking permit
You can apply if:
- the property is your main home
- you live in a permit-eligible area
- your vehicle is registered to your home address
You’ll need:
- proof that you live at the property (like a rates notice, lease, or utility bill)
- a current vehicle registration showing the vehicle is garaged at that address
For vehicles owned by a company
If your vehicle is owned by a company, you must provide a signed letter on official company letterhead. This letter must:
- include the company’s ABN
- be issued by the Fleet Coordinator, General Manager, Director or CEO
- confirm you are employed by the company
- state the vehicle is company-owned and include the registration number
- confirm you are the primary driver
- confirm the vehicle is kept at the address on the application
- include contact details for someone else at the company who can verify the letter
Note: We may request additional documents to confirm ownership before approving your application.
How many permits you can have
This depends on your property type:
- Single houses: up to 2 free permits
- Units (up to 4 on one block): 1 free permit per unit
- More than 4 units: no permits allowed (these are covered by planning rules)
You may apply for 1 additional permit per household for a fee. Extra permits are not guaranteed.
Eligible vehicles
Permits are for passenger or light vehicles used for personal use.
You can't get a permit for:
- trucks or heavy vehicles (over 4.5 tonnes or longer than 7.5 metres)
- boats, trailers, caravans or machinery
- unregistered vehicles
Where the permit is valid
- Only in approved residential zones near your address
- Only in the area shown on the permit
- Not valid in no-stopping zones, clearways, off-street car parks, or across driveways

- proof of where you live
- your vehicle registration
- any company letter (if needed)

You can apply for 1 extra permit per household. A fee applies. If your application is not approved, we’ll refund the fee.
Replace a lost, stolen or changed permit
If your permit is lost, stolen or you’ve changed vehicles, complete the online form.
You may need to provide a statutory declaration, and a fee will apply.
Renew your parking permit
Your permit lasts for 12 months from the date it was issued.
We’ll send you a renewal letter before it expires.
Moving house
If you're moving, let us know.
Your permit will no longer be valid once you move. Permits must be returned to Knox City Council.
No refunds are given for unused time on a permit.

Permit conditions
By using a permit, you agree to follow these rules:
- Permits must be displayed clearly on the passenger side of the windscreen
- Permits are not transferable to other vehicles or addresses
- Only valid for the vehicle and location listed on the permit
- Permits do not guarantee a parking space
- You must not sell, rent or give away your permit
- Misuse may result in cancellation and no refund will be given
Permits are not issued to properties used only for business or commercial purposes.
