Food safety

Food businesses must ensure their operations comply with food safety laws.

It is important to be informed about food safety and your legislative obligations. The Victorian Department of Health has vital information about food safety in a range of languages.

The Food Safety Information Council also has food safety advice and resources.

National Food Standards

The Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code provide a risk-based, preventative approach to providing safe and suitable food.

Authorities use the national standards to enforce food safety. Food businesses can use these standards to better understand their obligations.

Food Safety Program Documents

The food safety program is a written plan that describes how you will manage food safely in your business. It is a legal requirement for class 2 food premises.

Food business owners can download important food safety documents from the Department of Health, including templates:

  • to help prepare a food safety program
  • for program records to monitor food safety.

Council provides a user-friendly record-keeping template to help businesses comply with food safety legislation.

FoodSmart also offers an online tool to create food safety programs.

Allergens

Some people are allergic to particular foods or ingredients in foods. Allergic reactions can range from mild to life-threatening.

All food businesses should be aware of food allergens in order to protect their customers and avoid legal consequences.
