Disability parking permits

Knox City Council is changing to a new disability parking system known as the Accessible Parking Permit scheme.

This is a Victorian Government scheme designed to create a simpler, consistent and fairer process across Victoria.

About the Accessible Parking Permit scheme

Residents and organisations who require a new permit or need to renew or replace a permit need to apply with the new application process.

Improvements include:

  • temporary permits for 6, 12 or 24 months.
  • increased permit length from 3 years to 5 years for individuals.
  • a permanent disability classification, so reassessments are not required for future permit renewals.
  • a new single and secure state-wide permit design that will be used throughout Victoria.
  • the inclusion of occupational therapists, in addition to GPs, to assess eligibility for a permit.

Double Time (green permits) and permits for organisations will continue under the new scheme.

All Victorian Councils will be moving onto the new scheme in 2021.

Types of permits

There are two new types of permit:

Australian Disability Parking Permit – allows you to park in a disabled person parking bay AND park in an ordinary parking bay for twice the time limit specified.

Victorian Double Time Accessible Parking Permit – only allows you to park in an ordinary parking bay for twice the time indicated by any signage.
