Register for kindergarten

Step-by-step guide for parents to register their child for 3- and 4-year-old kindergarten programs in Knox via the Central Registration Scheme (CRS). Includes key dates, eligibility, priority criteria, and links to support.

Overview

Knox Council’s Central Registration Scheme (CRS) makes it easy to register your child for 3- and 4-year-old sessional kindergarten programs that participate in the scheme. 
You only need to complete one registration form per child to list up to three kindergarten preferences. 

Registrations open 1 May each year for the following year. 
To be included in the first-round offers, you’ll need to register before 30 June.

Step-by-step registration process

  1. Choose your preferred kindergarten

    • Visit Find a kindergarten to compare session times and programs.
    • Tour kindergartens where possible to see the facilities and meet educators.
    • Note your top three preferences before you start the form. 
  2. Register your child

    • Complete the online registration form.
    • Provide your child’s and family’s details.
    • Upload required documents:
      • Proof of residency (rates notice or utility bill)
      • Proof of concession cards, if applicable
      • Supporting documentation for children and/or families with additional needs.  
      • Proof of study or work in Knox 
  3. Submit your registration

    • Submit before 30 June to be included in the first-round offers.
    • You’ll receive a confirmation email once your registration is complete.

After you register

Accept a kindergarten offer

  • Offers are emailed in July for the first round.
  • Accept or decline your offer by the due date via the link in your email.
  • Once accepted, your kindergarten will contact you through October/November with enrolment details. 

Change your preferences

Late registrations

  • If you register after 30 June, your application will be included in the next available offer round (from August).
  • Late registrations are still welcome but may be placed on a waitlist depending on availability. 

If your child is waitlisted

  • You’ll receive an email that your child is on the waitlist and will be notified if a place becomes available.
  • Council continues to make offers throughout the year as places open up. 

Department of Education and Knox Priority of access

There are 13 Priority of access groups in Knox. Priority One and Two criterion are set by the Department of Education. Priority 3 to 13 criterion is set by Knox City Council and split into residents and non-residents of Knox.

Department of Education

  • High-priority One Children – Children at risk, including:
    • Out of Home Care
    • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children
    • Refugee or asylum seeker children
    • Children and or families holding concession cards
    • Children with multiple births (i.e. triplets)
    • Children and or/ families with additional needs
    • Children accessing an additional year of 3- or 4-year-old kindergarten or Pre Prep.  
  • High-priority Two Children - Children currently attending the service.  

Knox local priority of access - Knox residents

  • Local Priority Three - Council Integrated Long Day Care attendance  
  • Local Priority Four - Local Community Area – Twins and Siblings
  • Local Priority Five – Local Community Area – Siblings with previous connection
  • Local Priority Six - Lives within Local Community Area  
  • Local Priority Seven – Twins and Siblings  
  • Local Priority Eight – Siblings with previous connection
  • Local Priority Nine – Lives outside the Local Community Area  

Knox local priority of access - Knox non-residents

  • Local Priority Ten - Council Integrated Long Day Care attendance
  • Knox Local Priority Eleven - Twins or Siblings
  • Knox Local Priority Twelve - Siblings with previous connection
  • Knox Local Priority Thirteen - No connection to Knox

Kindergarten policy and procedure

Our Funded Kindergarten Policy and Kindergarten Central Registration Scheme Procedure set out how we manage kindergarten central registration scheme. They are designed to ensure that the process is accessible, and places are allocated fairly.

Fees

  • No fees are charged for 3 or 4-year-old sessional kindergarten. Kindergarten is funded by the Victorian Government.
  • Additional program-specific fees may apply for long day care integrated programs (register directly with provider).
