Composting
The benefits of compost include:
- it saves space in your bin
- it's a fantastic free fertiliser for your garden
- it improves the condition of your soil.
Food and garden service
You can now add food scraps to your green bin.

Pet poo
Pet poo cannot go in the food and garden bin or in your home compost. Dog and cat poo can contain parasites and bacteria that could make the compost unsafe.
You can purchase a pet poo compost system at a discounted price to dispose of dog and cat poo. The compost system should be placed away from any edible plants/veggie gardens.

How to compost
There are different ways to compost your food waste.
Compost bins
These are large, enclosed bins that you can place a mix of food scraps and garden clippings into.
Compost bins are useful if you have a garden to use the compost. Your garden is a source of dead leaves, mulch and clippings required for the process.

Worm farms
Worm farms house bedding and composting worms. You can add food scraps at regular intervals for the worms to eat.
Worm farms are great if you have a small garden, or children who would like to keep worms as pets.
Bokashi bins
Bokashi bins support beneficial microbes to ferment food waste.
These bins are compact, airtight and odour free. They are great if you don’t have a garden as they are designed to sit in your kitchen.
