Compost and food waste

Food waste makes up almost half of the rubbish in our rubbish bins. Home composting is one of the best things you can do to help the environment, as it cuts down on greenhouse gases.

Composting is the process of breaking down food scraps and garden waste into nutrient-rich soil and fertiliser.

Why we compost

The benefits of compost are:

  • it saves space in your rubbish bin
  • it's a fantastic free fertiliser for your garden
  • it improves the condition of your soil
  • it's better for the environment as it reduces food waste in landfill.

Join the compost community

Save up to 60 per cent off a compost bin, worm farm or bokashi bin and cut your waste in half!

One rebate is available per Knox household (ratepayers and renters). Residents that have already received a compost rebate are ineligible.

How to compost

There are different ways to compost your food waste:

Compost bins

Large enclosed bins in which you can place a mix of food scraps and garden clippings.

Compost bins are useful if you have a garden in which to use the compost. Your garden is a source of dead leaves, mulch and clippings required for the process.

Worm farms

Worm farms house bedding and composting worms. You can add food scraps at regular intervals for the worms to eat.

Worm farms are great if you have a small garden, or children who would like to keep worms as pets.

Bokashi bins

Bokashi bins harness beneficial microbes to ferment food waste.

These bins are compact, airtight and odour free. They are great if you don’t have a garden as they are designed to sit in your kitchen.
